1959 Cadillac Series 62
Description
1959 Cadillac Series 62
I purchased this car from a restoration shop in 2001 where it had been stored for fourteen years. After inspecting the car visually, we installed a new battery and gas and the engine fired right up. I then shipped the car to my garage in Colorado and started going through it. The cosmetics were pretty good, but I wanted a reliable driver, so I started going through the car. A new custom dual exhaust system was installed (it sounds great) and the fuel tank was removed, cleaned, boiled and coated. At that point, I became very busy working in California and it wasn't until 2008 that I resumed the project.
In 2008, I decided to ship it to my house in California and in preparation I had a reputable shop perform the following work:
Engine: Remove Carburetor, disassemble, clean and inspect parts. Replace mechanical choke with automatic electrical choke. Rebuild carburetor with new gaskets and seals. Replace spark plugs, clean and adjust ignition points and timing. Adjust carburetor linkage, full throttle stop and fuel mixture. Replace fuel filters (tank and carburetor)
Brakes: Disassemble rear brakes. Disassemble axle assembly; replace worn L. R. axel bearings. Replace both axel seals. Rebuild wheel seals. Replace break hoses, break shoes and assemble using new hardware. Disassemble front breaks. Rebuild wheel cylinders. Replace Break Hoses, shoes and assemble using new hardware. Repack front wheel bearings. Replace wheel seals. Replace master cylinder.
Suspension: Replace power steering gear, flush and renew. Replace worn steering coupler. Dissemble lower control arms, ball joints, steering knuckle, sway bar links and bushings, tie rods, idler arm, center link and pitman arm. Maguaflux pitman arm ? no cracks found. Replaced outer tie rod ends. Clean, de-scale and paint all parts. Replace upper and lower ball joints, upper and lower control arm bushings, sway bar links and bushings. Assemble suspension component and mount.
The shop I used did a really nice job. The car starts on the first try, doesn?t smoke, shift properly and brakes in a straight line. It?s a very reliable driver and I use it at least once per week. I have receipts for all work performed on hand and they will accompany the car to the next owner.
The paint and chrome are showing their age, but are in presentable condition. The interior has some rips and tears (the leather is original) and they have been professionally dyed.
Overall this car is amazingly rust free. I have found some pitting in the chrome, very minor bubbles the body and some surface rust in the various spots, but nothing structural. The rear passenger floor area is solid and you won't be disappointed when you see the underside of the car.
