Req Description Plan and execute technical assignments in the Corporate R&D organization with minimal professional guidance. Provide support for research and development activities and utilize items such as computers, simulation software, and other equipment.
Typical duties/responsibilities for quality may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Operate independently, in coordination with R&D staff, to perform R&D assignments that often involve technology watch, technology feasibility, and technology development. Assist in preparation of R&D prestudy technical reports, and related documents.
The desired candidate shall perform research in new trends in protection and control, with emphasis on protection. The candidate shall evaluate the influence of high penetration of renewable resources on existing protective relaying. Such high penetration comes for example from wind farms. Such work shall include evaluation of new transient responses, short circuit characteristics, local protection, and how it impacts traditional relay performance.
He/she shall conduct studies related to the interaction of power electronic controls on system protection. Such controls come from FACTs devices, local converter controls, or just sheer degree of PE penetration on the load side due to Smart Grid initiatives for example. The candidate shall include recent trends in transmission reinforcements and features of interconnecting transmission lines such as HVDC in his evaluation.
The candidate shall propose new protection solutions to maintain reliable operation of power systems in the presence of new types of generation, transmission, load, and power electronics just described. He shall be able to map his solutions considering trends in IED development in terms of sampling, synchronization, and on-board memory and processing power. The desired candidate shall plan, coordinate, and perform his duties in the most professional way.
Education Masters in EE and 1 year into PhD

Work Experience Requires a thorough understanding of fundamentals of protection, renewable generation, power electronic controls, and intermittent generator protection.. Requires the ability to independently make decisions regarding requests and priorities. Requires a moderate degree of judgment and initiative to recognize and resolve complex problems, develop methods and techniques, and adapt to changes. Requires good communication skills. Requires ability to develop innovative solutions to problems.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Master?s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with at least one year into the Ph.D. program.
