Overview:
3E Company provides data, systems and services in global chemical regulations to help companies with compliance. Key areas include hazardous substances, Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Classification & Labeling, MSDS/SDSs, Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances and other international agreements, national inventories, workplace health & safety, environment, and much more. We cover regulations from more than 80 countries. Our clients are many of the largest chemical & manufacturing companies in the world.
3E Company is looking for an Intern who combines solid knowledge of chemistry and chemical nomenclature with strong experience in programming to work on a variety of tasks. You will be trained in how our regulatory databases are structured and maintained.
Duration: From mid-January 2010 through the end of 2010
Responsibilities:
* Help maintain and improve the 3E chemical databases
* Add new regulations to the database, including devising appropriate data structures
* Solve thorny questions on chemical identification and CAS Registry Numbers
* Work with our proprietary Generics database, which links generic classes of chemicals (parents) to individual members (children)
* Review and revise small applications written by others; write new applications to solve problems as they arise
* Work on special projects, such as our Physical & Chemical Properties and Toxicological/Ecotox database, or our Food Additives & Flavors application
* Assist with documentation, expert tools, and quality assurance
Qualifications:
* Open to graduate and undergraduate students
* Strong foundation in organic, inorganic and reaction chemistry
* Strong foundation in chemical nomenclature, structures, formulas, and families
* Strong programming skills for writing small applications & for on-the-spot problem solving (preferably Visual Basic/SQL)
* Desire to learn about chemical & environmental regulations around the world
* Determination to get complex data right – our clients rely on our data to comply with the regulations
* Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment
* Foreign languages helpful
